Brianne Theisen breaks Pentathlon Record
In College Station, Texas, the Oregon Ducks Brianne Theisen set career bests in the high jump and shot, and these personal records helped to break a 30-year-old Canadian pentathlon record. Theisen had 4,555 points in total and took down the previous Canadian national record of 4,550 points that was set in 1982. Theisen also broke the previous NCAA record that was set by herself last year in the 2011 Championships.
This was Theisen’s first track meet in ten months, and it serves to show that most athletes perform better in track events after long periods of rest. Studies have been done trying to prove- or disprove- this notion, and there is truth to this new-age thought. Of course, one must practice; but there is proof that athletes perform better between rest. It can have the averse “rust” affect, but that wasn’t the case for Brianne Theisen.
She started off the competition by winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.38 seconds, and she just missed out on breaking her school record of 8.35 seconds. Her 6-foot-2 high jump shattered her previous personal best and broke the Ducks record by two inches.
“I haven’t competed in 10 months since I was hurt during the last outdoor season,” said Theisen. “We came to this meet to break up training and to see where I’m at. Apparently it’s pretty good.
She definitely showed no ill-effects from that injury and the rest did help her to some degree. Theisen obviously has an insane amount of athleticism, and her ability to break personal records in so many categories and set school and overall records shows her overall ability. Breaking a 30-year-old pentathlon record for a country is no easy feat, but that’s what Brianne Theisen did in a meet against the Texas A&M Aggies.
