Oregon Defeats Austin Peay 6-5 in Ninth Inning Comeback

It looked like a routine out for Austin Peay’s third baseman, but he couldn’t hang onto the ball as Aaron Payne flies into home plate, being the game-winning run and celebrating with the rest of the Ducks on the field.

Oregon came into the ninth inning down 5-4, another night that looked all too familiar coming off of their first series sweep against their in-state rivals.

Greg Bachman, who had three hits on the night, also had the third error for the Governors, costing them the chance to send the game into extra innings after Oregon tied the game after Brett Thomas scored J.J. Altobelli in a bases loaded situation.

Altobelli started off the bottom of the ninth rally by getting a walk. Payne was later hit by a pitch. Aaron Jones took a sacrifice hit to set up both men in scoring position. After Ryon Healy was intentionally walked, the rest is history.

The Ducks will play Cal State Fullerton, who won their game earlier against Indiana State 9-5, tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. (PT). You can catch the game once again online for free, a quick link to the stream can be found on Oregon’s official athletic page at that time.

OTHER NOTES

  • Jeff Gold was the Ducks’ starting pitcher, and had a great outing until he ran into trouble in the fifth inning. The Governors took a 3-2 lead, and Gold finished the night with 4.1 innings pitched, giving up seven hits and three earned runs. He also had four strikeouts.
  • An unsung hero for Oregon was third baseman Ryan Hambright, who had a hit on each of his four at-bats and scored twice.
