Tucson Regional: Louisville 3, New Mexico State 2

It was a thriller to open up the Tucson Regional as the Louisville Cardinal played the New Mexico State Aggies in the first game in Tucson, Arizona. This match-up featured the WAC regular season champion and an at-large team from the Big East. The Aggies jumped out to a quick two run lead after RBIs in the 1st inning and 3rd inning, but the Cardinals scored one run in the 4th inning and two runs in the 5th inning to win the game 3-2.

Both teams sent their aces to the mound to start the game. Justin Amlung threw six innings giving up two runs on six hits, walking three, and striking out five for Louisville. Amlung finished the day with an ERA of 2.27. For New Mexico State, Ryan Beck threw six innings giving up three runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out three. Beck finished the day with an ERA of 4.25.

The big bats for the Louisville Cardinals came from Nick Ratajczak, Zak Wasserman, and Kyle Gibson. Gibson finished the game going 2 for 3 and scored a run for Louisville. Wasserman went 1 for 3 with a run and a walk. Ratajczak finished the game going 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI. The only big bat for New Mexico State came from Zac Fisher. Fisher scored the Aggies only runs on the day with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st and an RBI on an error by Nick Ratajczak in the bottom of the 3rd.

The Louisville Cardinals will await the winner of the second game in Tucson, Arizona (Arizona/Missouri) while the New Mexico State Aggies will play the loser in an important elimination game. Both of those games will be played on Saturday, June 2th at 4:00 p.m. (PT) and 8:00 p.m. (PT) on ESPNU.

Saturday, June 2nd

  • 4:00 p.m. (PT) – GAME 3: New Mexico State vs Game 2 Loser (ESPNU)
  • 8:00 p.m. (PT) – GAME 4: Louisville vs Game 2 Winner (ESPNU)
