2012 London Olympics: Holliday Unable to Medal in Pole Vault

Two former Ducks participated in day four of the track and field events at the 2012 London Olympics. One of them were able to advance to the next round, but the other was unable to get a medal in the final.

First, Becky Holliday was unable to get a medal in the women’s pole vault. Her highest mark was at 4.45 meters when she was successful on her third and final attempt. She wasn’t able to clear 4.55 meters in any of her three attempts.

With that mark, she finished in ninth place. American Jenn Suhr received the gold after clearing 4.75 meters and winning in a tiebreaker against Cuba’s Yarisley Silva. Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva was the defending two-time champion that finished with 4.70 mark and the bronze medal.

Over at the qualifying round in the women’s 1,500m, Australia’s Zoe Buckman wasn’t one of the 18 automatic qualifiers but will be moving into the semifinals because of her finish on time. Participating in the third heat, she finished with a time of 4:07.83, placing her at eighth.

Gamze Bulut of Turkey was the winner of the third heat. The Americans that will be competing in the semifinals are Morgan Uceny and Jennifer Simpson.

Tuesday’s Schedule:

  • Women’s Javelin Throw opens up with their qualifying rounds at 2:00 a.m. PT. Rachel Yurkovich will be representing USA and will participate in the second round of the qualifiers at 3:25 a.m. PT.
  • Men’s 1,500m comes to a conclusion with the final at 1:15 p.m. PT. Matthew Centrowitz will be part of the mix to try and give the Americans another medal.
