Oregon Baseball: Ducks Hit Three Home Runs in Win vs Portland, 11-7

The Ducks faced another ‘tuneup’ game in Portland, but they now seem to be getting a little more serious as the Pac 12 Schedule welcomes Stanford to PK Park for the Weekend. Oregon played one game vs the Pilots and the Oregon offense decided to wake up after a tough time against UCLA last weekend.

Press Release from the University of Oregon:

PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Baumgartner hit one of three home runs by No. 13 Oregon as the Ducks rallied to beat Portland 11-7 at Joe Etzel Field on Tuesday.

Baumgartner hit a three-run home run, the first of his career, to right field to break a 3-3 tie and put Oregon (30-10) in front for good. Shaun Chase added a solo homer to left field three pitches later to put the Ducks on top 7-3.

The back-to-back homers by Baumgartner and Chase were the first consecutive home runs hit by Oregon players since baseball was reinstated for the 2009 season.

Brett Thomas hit the Ducks’ third home run to lead off the fourth inning after Portland (13-28) cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the third.

Thomas led six Ducks with multiple hits going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Baumgartner finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Chase was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while J.J. Altobelli went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Mitchell Tolman finished 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

Portland got on top of the Ducks early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Jeff Melby picked up a RBI single and then scored on a base hit by Brian Frattali.

The Ducks came right back in the top of the second scoring three runs on four hits, all with two outs, to take a 3-2 lead.

Chase started the rally with a single to left field and moved to second on a base hit by Connor Hofmann. Altobelli drove in Chase with a base hit to center to cut the Pilots lead to 2-1.

Thomas gave Oregon the lead with a two-run double scoring Hofmann from third and Altobelli from second.

Portland tied the game in the bottom of the second, but Baumgartner and Chase gave the Ducks the lead back with the two homers.

Oregon added single runs in the fifth and sixth while Portland scored a run in the fifth.

The back end of the Ducks’ bullpen shut the Pilots down holding them scoreless over the final four innings.

Jeff Gold didn’t allow a run in the sixth after giving up an unearned run in the fifth. Darrell Hunter pitched scoreless seventh and eighth inni ngs allowing just one hit, and Jimmie Sherfy finished the game without allowing a runner in the ninth.

Cole Wiper (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing three runs in two innings. Zack Torson (0-6) took the loss allowing seven runs in 2.1 innings on seven hits.

Oregon gets set to host Stanford this weekend at PK Park.
