It’s the weekend of the USA Track and Field Championships in Des Moines Iowa and a familiar name is near the top of the Decathalon leader board. Olympic Gold Medalist and former Oregon Duck Ashton Eaton is in second place overall.
Here is a look at his first five events:
100 Meter Dash : 10.48 seconds (1st place)
Long Jump: 7.59m, 24-11 (skipped his third attempt) (2nd place)
Shotput: 15.00 49 2 1/2 (3rd place)
High Jump: 1.90 6 2 3/4 (skipped his third attept) (12th place)
400 Meter Dash: 46.89 (1st place)
Eaton’s coach Harry Marra said this is more of a tuneup for Eaton:
“Just going thru motions in this meet. No sense risking anything.”
The Decathalon concludes Saturday. Eaton needs to finish in the top 3 to make Team USA for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships, which will be held in Moscow in August.
He is currently in second place behind former Arkansas Razorback Gunner Nixon who is currently unattached.
