Tuesday Morning Oregon Head Coach Mark Helfrich was on the Dan Patrick Show talking about the Ducks, the new facility, Mariota and even Johnny Heisman(he was almost a Duck)
With the whole “Johnny Manziel situation” the question of having your best player or players on the field came up and the ‘want’ to face those player(s)
“Depends on the circumstances, we don’t want any violent injuries or anything – maybe a bad case of food poisoning for a couple hours.”
On the Non Conference Schedule:
“Years in Advance…2018, 2019, 2020 – there are even more beyond that slotted in.”
One of the things that Oregon has been known for over the last few years has been uniforms to which Helfrich did admit that he had a say in what the Ducks wore on the field(aka a veto vote). He and Patrick had a fun ‘brainstorming’ session on new concepts and ideas for the Ducks on the field.
Patrick then asked about Helfrich’s role (if any) in Heisman Promotion (for Mariota).
“Zero. We’ll certainly talk about him and he is an unbelievable player and a great person…that’s your job”
Helfrich was one of the guys that recruited not only Mariota, but also Manziel to come to Oregon. Part of the conversation turned to why he did not come play for the Ducks.
“He was very honest and up front…if School A or School B comes calling, I’m out.”
Conversation then turned to the Vienna Vikings(where Helfrich was the QB) who said he put up big numbers in the interception column. Let’s hope Mariota doesn’t pick up that trait.
The Ducks kick off the season on Saturday vs Nicholls (1pm, Fox Sports 1)
