Helfrich Gets ‘Defensive’ In Talking about Wyoming

In the Pac-12 Coaches Conference Call earlier this week Oregon Head Coach Mark Helfrich spoke about his team’s victory over Michigan State. There was talk of his legacy and he brushed it off, “I have no idea. I’ve said from the beginning, I don’t own a stamp. If we’re the group and team that kept on winning after Chip Kelly left, that’s a good enough legacy for me.” For a team looking ahead to a possible berth in the College Football Playoff, I see that as an ‘all business’ type of answer, which if fine.

Oregon cannot have a letdown this week against a team that comes in 2-0. Wyoming enters with a first year head coach and some talent at key positions. Helfrich spoke about their defense, “They really scheme you in special teams to a degree – there’s an absolute plan, they’re very multiple on defense. It’s the most defense we’ve seen this year in terms of variation.” The Oregon Ducks counter with a defense of their own that found a way to pitch a shutout in the fourth quarter last week against Michigan State. Don Pellum’s defense also gave up just a field goal in the third quarter last week.

This will be the final non conference game of the season for Oregon as the Pac-12 regular season as the Ducks head to Pullman to take on Washington State. (Saturday, September 20th, 7:30pm PT, ESPN)

As it currently stands the Oregon Ducks enter the game on Saturday as heavy favorites, at last check the line was forty five points in favor of the home team. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 11am Pacific Time on Pac-12 Networks.
