Oregon Ducks Put Together a Complete Team Win over UCLA Bruins

The Oregon Ducks and UCLA Bruins both entered the game on Saturday afternoon needed a win. Oregon won the opening coin toss and had a positive drive going with Mariota and Freeman at the controls, but were unable to convert entering Bruins territory and were also penalized during the drive. Oregon would punt and the UCLA Bruins would get the ball.

UCLA would start the game with a facemask penalty on their opening drive. The Bruins would not score on the drive but things got chippy early as Oregon would start the second drive of the game on the thirty five yard line following a penalty after the kickoff on fourth down.

The second drive for the Oregon Ducks ended with Center Hroniss Grasu becoming the leading receiver among Centers when a pass play went wrong and the ball bounced back toward Grasu, who jumped up and caught the ball at its high point. The Oregon Defense would hold on the first two drives of the game.

Oregon Ducks Wide Receiver Keanon Lowe headed to the locker room before the end of the first quarter. He did not get a chance to see a big play by Tony Washington and the Defense that led to an Oregon Ducks recovery off a hit on Quarterback Brett Hundley causing him to lose the ball.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota rushed for thirteen yards for the score and the Ducks picked up a two point conversion taking an 8-0 lead on UCLA. The Bruins would pick up a field goal on the next possession. Midway through the second quarter Oregon would strike again in the endzone.

Thomas Tyner would scamper twenty-one yards off a pass from Mariota to makeit 15-3 Oregon. It would be the thirty-second straight pass for a score from the Oregon Ducks Quarterback. The Oregon Ducks Defense looked to stop UCLA and Quarterback Brett Hundley on the next drive as the Ducks looked to take some control.

Oregon would continue to show on Offense with a thirty one yard pass to Pharoah Brown from Mariota for a score. Oregon would miss the extra point adding to their lead, 21-3 with just under three minutes left on the first half. UCLA would respond before the half.

Brett Hundley would take it in just before halftime giving Oregon a 21-10 lead. Mariota had his hand on all thre touchdowns for the Oregon Ducks in the first half. The Oregon Defense played better in the first half and there was a total of one sack in the first thirty minutes of play. The Bruins would start with the ball to start the second half.

On the Oregon Ducks first drive of the second half the Oregon Signal caller had another highlight moment. He almost dropped the ball, but recovered and took off twenty yards to the endzone for the score. It game the Ducks a 28-10 lead on UCLA with just over nine minutes to go in the third quarter.

It would not turn out well for UCLA on their next drive. The Bruins would turn the ball over to Oregon as Ifo Ekpre-Olomu picked off a Hundley pass. Two plays later, Running Back Royce Freeman would take it into the endzone extending Oregon’s lead to 35-10. The Oregon Defense looks to have turned the page from the first four weeks of the season and although they are giving up yards to the Bruins, have battled to get a pick six leading to a score.

Oegon would again find themselves with the ball and go for out on fourth and two from the two yard line. They would be denied, but did take time off the clock. Brett Hundley and the UCLA Bruins would rush for a forty one yard gain before Oregon’s Defense would stop two running plays before they got started making it third down. Hundley would pass on a play that could have been pass interference, but it was not called. The punt would give the ball back to Oregon..

The Ducks took over and ran away with it adding a score from Running Back Royce Freeman making it 42-10. Freeman became the first Running Back to rush for one-hundred yards this season on the score giving him a game total of one-hundred one at that point.

The UCLA Bruins did find a way to break through in the fourth quarter with a Brett Hundley touchdown to Payton and a successful two point conversion gave Oregon a 42-18 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter. Hundley would try to work some magic the rest of the game and add another touchdown with a handoff to Nate Starks for a nine yard run. UCLA made it interesting recovering an onside kick to get the ball back, and UCLA would score again with Hundley connecting with Payton. UCLA scored three touchdowns in a minute and a half span on the Oregon Ducks Defense, but the clock was in Oregon’s favor and the Ducks would hold on for the victory.

Entering the game both UCLA and Oregon gave up a total of twenty-two sacks over a three game span. On the day Oregon sacked UCLA Quarterback Brett Hundley five times and with Jake Fisher returning to anchor the Offensive Line Oregon gave up no sacks on Marcus Mariota. The Oregon was responsible for four touchdowns on the day, two through the air and two on the ground in the 42-30 win over UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

The Oregon Ducks would move to 5-1 on the season(2-1 Pac-12) and have a solid opportunity to move back into the Top Ten in the polls when they are released on Sunday.
