Oregon Ducks Hawkins Throws One-Hitter vs BYU, Strikes Out 12

Cheridan Hawkins appeared to be in post season form before the NCAA Tournament first round even began at Howe Field on Thursday. Oregon met BYU and the Oregon Ducks Starting Pitcher had one small hiccup in the second inning. She then buckled down to throw six innings in a run ruled 8-0 Oregon win. Hawkins threw a one-hitter and struck out twelve of the twenty batters she faced in the opener.

The Oregon Ducks Offense was off to an early start with a walk in run in the bottom of the first inning without a hit. It took till the sixth, but the Ducks scored five runs in the inning before Koral Costa came to the plate and hit a single to left to run rule BYU 8-0 for the win.

Earlier in the afternoon Fresno State, who entered the NCAA Tournament with a fifteen game winning streak fell to North Dakota State 4-0. The Ducks face NDSU on Friday at 11am in the third game of the NCAA Tournament.

With four teams it is a double elimination tournament. BYU and Fresno State will now have to fight harder to get to Saturday and the chance to win the regional. If the Ducks beat the Bisons on Friday they will play their third game on Saturday.

An Oregon loss means two games to tomorrow, at 11am PT, and then at 5pm PT.
