The season started for the Oregon Women’s Basketball team early on Sunday morning on the road against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The game was scheduled last season as a home and home two year series. Oregon lost last season in Eugene. There was one very notable change for those watching online. There were rule changes in both Men’s and Women’s basketball for this season. Most notably for the Women’s game, a change to ‘Four Quarters’ rather than two halves. Instead of two 20 minute quarters, there are now four 10 minutes quarters. It will take some time to get used to the adjustment for most of us.

In the opener, the Oregon Ducks won 79-77 over the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. Lexi Bando led the team with 18 points and four players finished the game in double figures. Jillian Alleyne posted her first double double of the year with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Multi-Sport Star Liz Brenner who is focused on just basketball this season came off the bench  to pick up two points. Kat Cooper had 13 points off the bench for the Ducks.

As a team, the Oregon Ducks hit just over 50 percent from the field, but the Defense was the story. 35 rebounds, 25 on the Defensive end, along with 5 steals and 4 blocks were enough to hold off the Tar Heels hitting 42 percent of their shots for the game. The win was over a ranked team. North Carolina came in ranked 22nd. It is a long season ahead and a win against a non-conference ranked team could play a hand in the post season destination for Kelly Graves and the Ducks.
