Oregon Football was once a team that was rich at the Quarterback Position, but now another is leaving the team.

On Monday, Comcast Sportsnet Northwest was the first to report that Quarterback Travis Jonsen was leaving Oregon. The reason is simple. Jonsen believes the race for Starter concluded at the end of Spring Practice and he has no chance to beat out the incumbent in Justin Herbert.

Willie Taggart said following the Spring Game that Herbert had some work to do over the summer to earn the Starting Role at Quarterback. He did not name a Starter when asked.

Jonsen was a former 4-Star Recruit under Head Coach Mark Helfrich. According to Aaron Fentress, Travis Jonsen had to be talked out of leaving before Spring Camp. He stayed to be the primary competition for Herbert. I’m not exactly sure it was fair for him to stay, but Herbert showed in the Spring Game he was more than halfway to becoming the leader for the team moving forward with a 16 for 26 performance with three touchdowns.

One area that the Oregon Head Coach touched on following the game was his Leadership ability on the field. He wants his Quarterback to be someone the ‘team’ will play for on all three sides – Offense, Defense and Special Teams.

With Travis Jonsen leaving the program Oregon will have just two Quarterbacks on the Roster entering Fall Camp with Freshman Braxton Burmeister and Herbert. Jonsen has opted to transfer to Riverside City College for the upcoming season. He will then have the option to transfer to an FBS School for the 2018 season.
