For the first time in two years an Oregon pitcher has thrown a no hitter. (Jessica Moore pitched a non conference no hitter in a 2011 game victory vs Weber State). It was the first Pac 12 No hitter for a Duck since 2006.

Cheridan Hawkins accomplished the feat in five innings of work on Saturday afternoon at Howe Field winning 8-0 over Arizona.

Press Release from the U of O:

EUGENE – With Saturday’s five-inning, 8-0 victory, the No. 6 University of Oregon softball team (35-6, 12-2) guaranteed itself of taking its third straight series from No. 17 Arizona (27-16, 4-7).In the teams’ 100th all-time meeting, the Ducks posted their largest margin of victory vs. the eight-time national champions, and bettered their recent six- and five-run victories in ’11 (12-6) and ’12 (12-7).Leading the way, freshman Cheridan Hawkins (14-3) pitched Oregon’s first no-hitter since a seven-inning, 6-1 win by teammate Jessica Moore vs. Weber State in 2011.The three-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Hawkins struck out 11, walked one, and hit two batters, while UA’s other four outs came via fly balls.”I hadn’t looked at the scoreboard all game, so I didn’t know it until we scored the last run and my teammates asked (if I knew I had a no-hitter),” Anderson said. “The offense had 10 hits so that gave me a lot of confidence. I just tried to stayed in control and keep my composure.”

Her first seven outs of the game came via strikeouts to help her end with UO’s 18th-best ‘K’ total ever.Saturday also marked her fifth double-digit strikeout total of the year behind her 15 vs. Boston College (6 innings), 13 against New Mexico (6.1 ip) and 10 vs. Louisiana-Monroe (6.0 ip) and then-No. 4 California (6.0 ip).The Anderson, Calif,. native had already logged three starts this season with only one hit allowed in six innings or more.Leading the Ducks at the plate, sophomore center fielder Janie Takeda (3-for-4) tied her season high in hits with her team-leading 22nd multi-hit game of the season. The returning All-Pac-12 Freshman Team choice also hit her eighth double of the season, and knocked in her second RBI of the game with a seventh-inning single.

“I didn’t have a great day yesterday,” Takeda said, “so the coaches told me to relax and try to slow things down in the box. Watching Cheridan gave us so much confidence. Once we started getting runners on, hitting became contagious, so we were glad we could do our part, too.”

Junior designated player Alexa Peterson (2-for-3, RBI) added her 12th multi-hit contest of the slate, and four other Ducks hit safely once.

“Today was a complete win,” Oregon head coach Mike White said. “Cheridan was amazing, and kept their hitters guessing. She challenged them – you’re not going to get a no-hitter by pitching around people. The defense was also great, and Danica (Mercado) made a diving catch in left field to preserve the no-hitter (to open the fourth inning). Our offense really came together, and continually put runners on.”

Arizona starter Nancy Bowling (4-5) pitched the first three innings, struck out three, walked three, allowed five hits, and all four of her runs allowed were earned.

UO touched her for the first three runs in the third inning after a Mercado hit by pitch, Takeda single, and walk to senior second baseman Kaylan Howard loaded the bases.

Junior first baseman Kailee Cuico followed with an RBI walk, and after a Peterson RBI single, another run scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth inning, the first three batters reached off Babcock on sophomore third baseman Jamie Rae Sullivan’s first double of the campaign, a Mercado single and Takeda RBI double.Shelby Babcock relieved her, and among the 10 batters she faced, struck out one, walked one, gave up four hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.UO’s final runs in the fifth came on a two-run homer by freshman catcher Janelle Lindvall (her ninth of the season), a RBI single by Takeda, and game-ending RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore pinch-hitter Hannah Melick. At the plate for Arizona, Kelsey Rodriguez reached on a first-inning walk, and Chelsea Goodacre and Brigette Del Ponte reached on consecutive hit by pitches in the fourth inning.Including Friday’s 5-3 win over the returning Super Regional advancers, UO has won six of their last eight meetings (and 20 all-time). In recent years under their fourth-year mentor White, the Ducks took the series by 2-1 counts in Tucson last year and in Eugene in 2011.

Looking ahead, the two teams meet for the series finale Sunday at noon, and the game will be televised live by the Pac-12 Network.

For Sunday’s ASA Day promotion, kids that wear their softball/baseball uniforms to the game will get $2 tickets. The contest is also a BiMart 2-for-1 ticket deal for fans that show their BiMart cards at the gate.

March 23, 2013; San Jose, CA, USA; Oregon Ducks forward Arsalan Kazemi (14) celebrates with guard Johnathan Loyd (10) after the third round of the NCAA basketball tournament against the Saint Louis Billikens at HP Pavilion.
The Ducks(28-8), led by Freshman Damyean Dotson’s 23 points, including his first five three point attempts, took a 35-19 lead into halftime and never looked back taking care of the St Louis Billikens(28-7) 74-57. Now it’s time to play with the big boys of College Basketball. On Friday, the Ducks face off with the Louisville Cardinals, and if they can find a way to advance will meet either Michigan State or Duke for a shot at the Final Four.

UCLA and Colorado both lost over the weekend and one coach was let go after taking his team to four Final Fours in his career and this year’s Pac 12 Title. Makes no sense to me whatsoever..more on that in a moment. Arizona was able to survive and punch their ticket to the Sweet 16, along with the Ducks. The Wildcats get to play a little closer to home in Los Angeles against Ohio State on Friday. If they can advance they would face upset minded Wichita State or Play in game winner Lasalle. Speaking of upset minded, I have become a huge fan of Florida Gulf Coast after this weekend. A matchup with the Ducks would be possible moving forward, but what an incredible leap by a program in it’s very first NCAA Tournament as a 15 seed.

Since losing the Pac 12 Title to UCLA, who fired their coach Ben Howland over the weekend, Oregon has been on a hot streak. They took care of business to win the Pac 12 Tournament Title, and beat Oklahoma State and St Louis to get where they are right now.

“We think we can win the whole thing.” -Dotson on how far Oregon can go

The postgame locker room scene was filled with emotion from Center Tony Woods, who left the game in the 2nd half with four fouls. There is also a nice song/chant started by players and a quick speech from Coach Dana Altman.

Tipoff time in Indianapolis for the Ducks and the Cardinals is set for 4:15(PT) on Friday. The game will be broadcasts on CBS.

Oregon Baseball Holds Arizona in Place, Wildcats Still in Search for a Conference Victory

After losing a game on the road last weekend at USC, Coach George Horton had a talk with his Oregon Ducks(18-6, 5-1 Pac 12) . It worked. Over the weekend at PK Park the Ducks pitched their way to three consecutive victories against the Defending National Champions. Arizona(15-11, 0-6 Pac 12) came into the game licking it’s wounds after being swept last weekend by #3 Oregon State at home. The Ducks also had solid hitting from Shaun Chase, Aaron Payne and Ryan Healy. Oregon is also in a four way tie for first place in the Pac 12 Conference with Oregon State, UCLA and Cal.

Oregon’s homestand continues with a game on Tuesday at 6pm as they host Portland for one game before continuing the Pac 12 Schedule Thursday with Washington coming to Eugene for a series this weekend.

Last night was a fun one in College Basketball – another reason why they don’t play these games on paper. To start the night #4 Michigan headed into Penn State looking to possibly solidify a #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. They were denied by a hungry Nittany Lion team, who earned their first conference victory of the season on Senior night in Happy Valley. It was an 84-78 upset of the Wolverines. A well fought game by PSU.

I’m sure there are die hard Duck fans that are looking at ESPN this morning, perhaps at the Pac 12 Standings are noticing something different. Oregon(22-6, 11-4 Pac 12) is tied with UCLA at the top of the conference, and we haven’t played the Civil War yet against Oregon State(13-5, 3-12 Pac 12). No, this is not a typo.

Feb 27, 2013; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Arizona Wildcats forward Solomon Hill (44) reacts during the game against the Southern California Trojans at the Galen Center. USC defeated Arizona 89-78. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The USC Trojans took it to Arizona on Wednesday night, the Wildcats came out flat and may have been caught looking ahead to their weekend matchup with UCLA. Arizona may have also lost their shot at a high seed in the NCAA Tournament and most likely will fall to the #3 seed or lower of the Pac 12 Tournament. When it comes to the conference resume, Arizona is starting to get some holes punched in it. UCLA has already beat the Wildcats once this year already back on January 24th.

Tied with UCLA atop the Pac 12 standings Oregon faces Oregon State who comes to Eugene Thursday night for the Civil War at Matthew Knight Arena. It’s Senior Night and several Ducks will be playing their final game in front of the home crowd including Tony Woods, E.J. Singler, Carlos Emory and Arsalan Kazemi. The ceremony celebrating these players will happen after the game.

Earlier this week Dana Altman announced that Freshman Dominic Artis is closer to a return, he will likely make an appearance against the Beavers. If the Ducks get a victory, they will be a game up on UCLA and a game and half up on Arizona heading into next week.
