Oregon Starting pitcher Jake Reed began a solid night on Friday. The game would unravel in the fifth and sixth innings and Cal State Fullerton scored seven runs in two innings. Oregon’s offense could not keep up led by First Baseman Ryon Healy(2-4, RBI) and Brett Thomas(1-3, Run Scored, RBI). They fell 8-2.

On Saturday, Healy continued to have the hot hands at the plate with two hits. Oregon Starting Pitcher Tommy Thorpe gave up three runs in the first. It was a hit of the worst kind for the Ducks, two men on and two out. Fullerton’s Michael Lorenzen hit a three run homer off the left field foul pole. The Ducks were able to score two for the game, but it wasn;t enough. Justin Garza took the win for the Titans, allowing two runs on six hits in eight innings.Cal State Fullerton won 5-2.

In the Sunday Finale Oregon turned to Freshman Cole Irvin on the mound and he was able to give the Ducks what the needed. He pitched seven innings, giving up eight hits while giving up a run and striking out three. At the plate Brett Hambright went 3-4 with 3 RBI’s. Closer Jimmie Sherfy got some work to close it out in a non save situation as Oregon won 9-1.

The Ducks return home to PK Park this week and get right back to it. Oregon hosts Cal State Northridge for two games Monday(6pm) and Tuesday(Noon) and This Weekend will host Vanderbilt for a three game set Friday(6pm), Saturday(2pm), and Sunday(Noon) followed by a two game series with Texas State Tuesday and Wednesday(both games at 6pm) before kicking off the Pac 12 schedule in Los Angeles against USC.

Oregon Ducks This Week:

The 10th ranked Oregon Softball team(14-3) is playing in the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Florida this weekend and face some more solid competition in non conference play, including #11 and fellow College World Series Returnee LSU, who the Ducks beat 10-2 to open the series on Friday. In the second game Friday, Oregon beat LIU Brooklyn 10-2.

The Ducks face Boston College Saturday(7am) and Temple(9:15am). Sunday’s action includes games against Michigan(6am) and James Madison(9:15am). All Times are Eastern.

Oregon Baseball Set to Face Coach Horton’s Former Team on the Road

Oregon Baseball began their trip to Cal State Fullerton with a loss on Friday night, 8-2.  Oregon looks to even the series Saturday afternoon. Coach George Horton spent 11 seasons with the Titans and led them to the College World Series six times, winning it all once. The Ducks look to continue their early season momentum.

The five starting pitchers the Ducks have used this year have combined for an ERA under 2 and 1.97 – Oregon starts a stretch of eight games in the next 10 days, and if that’s not tough enough early in the season, six of those games are against teams ranked in the Top 20.

Oregon’s Three Game Series with Cal State Fullerton continues Saturday at 6pm, and the final game of the series will be on Sunday at 12pm.

The Ducks then return home to face Cal State North Ridge for a two game series.

Oregon Track Athletes Look to Solidify Spots for NCAA Championship

Several Ducks are looking to help their chances of making the NCAA Championship by working on their skills and hopefully improving times in Qualifiers. On Friday Oregon’s Mike Berry won 400 meter hurdles in a season best 46.03 seconds, which ranks fourth nationally at the UW Final Qualifier.

Oregon Baseball is starting the season strong at 7-1. Tuesday night they hosted the Portland Pilots for a one game series. The Ducks used four pitchers and struck out 15, but Portland made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Duck Closer, Sophomore Jimmie Sherfy came in with  a runner on first and had the game tying run at the plate. He then struck out the side for the Ducks win and his third save on the season. A good early test for the young man on several watch lists for awards this year.

At the plate the Ducks had key hits from Scott Heineman, Outfielder Brett Thomas and First Baseman Ryon Healy. All three drove in runs for Oregon. The Sacrifice fly came into play in two scoring situations in both the third and fifth innings, but the story for the game was pitching.

Four pitchers, starting with one who was sidelined all last season with an elbow injury, Christian Jones. He made his first start since May 2011 and allowed two hits in three innings while striking out five. Jeff Gold, who last week was hit by a comebacker in Hawaii was back in action and followed Jones. He was equally effective striking out 7 in four innings and getting his first win of 2013. Freshman pitcher Garrett Cleavenger entered for an inning plus striking out two before Closer Jimmie Sherfy closed the door. A 3-1, 15 strikeout performance by the Ducks.

The Ducks hit the road this weekend for a series against a team that Coach George Horton knows all too well, he coached them before becoming a Duck. Oregon heads to Cal State Fullerton for a three game series starting on Friday at 7pm.
