If you live in the Eugene/Springfield area you may have noticed a lot more traffic the last few days. The NCAA Track and Field Championships are at Hayward Field through June 9th. In the first two days of competition, the Oregon Women have managed to stay close to the top. They are currently 4th behind Kansas, Arizona State and Arizona. The Ducks only had one point heading into the day and no women in competition in Thursday’s action.

Jun 6, 2013; Eugene, OR, USA; Johnathan Cabral of Oregon wins a 110m hurdles semifinal Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

For the Men, Thursday was tough. The 4×400 relay team that included De’Anthony Thomas and B.J. Kelley did not advance past their respective heats. Both the men and women did advance in the 1500 meters. Oregon Junior Mac Fleet had the fastest qualifying time on Thursday at 3:21.41. The men ended Thursday tied for 7th place.

Dakotah Keys finished the Decathalon in 11th place. He won the javelin competition with a throw of 214-3 and matched his personal best in the high jump at 16-0.75

In other action, the Oregon men got on the board in the Hammer with Greg Skipper placing 4th and in the 10,000 Meters Parker Stinson took 6th.

“I think being here was a big reason why I got sixth. I have lots of fans cheering me on and I think it’s unacceptable to not score in the 10K in front of a home crowd, especially at Hayward.” Parker Stinson after the 10,000 Meter Race

The Oregon men have some work to do and the Women need to hang tough through the weekend. Right now, the Women have the best chance at the top prize, but don’t count out the men just yet. We have all seen stranger things happen at Hayward Field.

With Oregon Baseball’s season now over finishing with a new record for wins, but disappointment with not moving onto the Super Regional next week and Oregon Softball’s season now also complete we focus on what Oregon is known for.

Track and Field and a chance for the Ducks to shine and show their talents off against colleges throughout the country.

A big time Track and Field Event comes to Hayward Field this week with schools from all over the country participating and ESPN has a look at Defenders who like to intercept Quarterback passes in this week’s LinkedUp.

The NCAA Track and Field Championships are upon us, saw several from the Purdue contingent walking around the Mo Center yesterday afternoon. It looks like the weather, and the pollen will both be cooperating this weekend. Local Eugene station KEZI had a nice layout of who to watch and what to look for during the Championships at Hayward Field.

ESPN is continuing to look at College Football it’s weekly Pac 12 blog. This week they are focusing on the Defense, specifically the playmakers who are likely to intercept a pass. There are several Oregon Ducks on the list including Safety Eric Dargan and Corner Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. One name that is not on the list and may be the difference maker this season for the Ducks is Avery Patterson, who is coming off a knee injury and surgery for 2013. We’ll see how he responds in the first few games of the season.

It’s going to be a showdown at the Oregon Relays this weekend at Hayward Field in Eugene. The meet begins on Friday at 2pm, but the main event will feature Oregon and Arkansas, both with dual entries into the meet.

According to GoDucks.com,

The competition starts with a bang as the Ducks open with ninth-ranked Greg Skipper in the hammer. The evening’s other event, the men’s Bill McChesney, Jr., 5,000 Meters, is one of the marquis races. Two of the nation’s top 10,000 meter runners, No. 1 Parker Stinson of Oregon and No. 5 Solomon Haile of Arkansas, will square off along with the Ducks’ Matthew Melancon. Ben Blankenship of the Oregon Track Club Elite and Japan’s Tsuyoshi Ugachi are also in this field.

Saturday’s schedule finds a number of ranked athletes in action. The 110 meter hurdles will be one to watch with national leader Johnathan Cabral of Oregon against the Razorbacks’ 11th-ranked Caleb Cross. Those two also meet in the 400 meter hurdles, where Cross is ranked No. 10.

In the sprints, football’s De’Anthony Thomas (No. 14 nationally) is in the 100 meters, while Arkansas fields No. 15 Akheem Gauntlett and No. 18 Marek Niit in the 200.

No. 8 Mike Berry of Oregon leads the field in the 400, while the Ducks’ Elijah Greer will make his 2013 debut at 800 meters.

Oregon also has No. 4 Matt Miner and Mac Fleet in the 1,500 meters, as well as No. 3 Sam Crouser in the javelin.

Arkansas counters with the nation’s No. 3 pole vaulter in Andrew Irwin and No. 3 long jumper in Tarik Batchelor. Batchelor is also No, 12 in the triple jump, where he’s joined by 28th-ranked Anthony May. The Razorbacks also feature a pair of 7-foot high jumpers in No. 13 May and No. 14 Brede Ellingsen.

If the meet comes down to the relays, Arkansas comes in with the No. 7 4×100 team, while the two schools are nearly in a dead heat in the 4×400 with the Ducks at No. 10 and the Razorbacks at No. 15.

For Oregon, the magic number is 82. There will be a total of 163 points up for grabs.

You can watch the Relays for free on the Pac 12 Networks weblink, and get Live Results here.
