The 2013 NFL Combine is a place where college players can show off their talent on and off the field. Five Oregon Ducks had the opportunity this week to workout with NFL trainers, as well as former players, General Managers and Coaches.

Oregon’s Contingent included Defensive End Dion Jordan, Running Back Kenjon Barner, Linebacker Kiko Alonso, Offensive Lineman Kyle Long, and Defensive Back John Boyett.

Below are some of the links looking back a the 2013 NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Let’s take a quick look at several players who look to improve their Draft Status, starting with Defensive End Dion Jordan.

Dion Jordan ran the 40 yard Dash in 4.60 seconds, which tied him for third overall. Jordan has a torn labrum and will undergo shoulder surgery this week. He played with the tear throughout part of his Senior year with the Ducks.

NFL combine: Former Oregon Ducks defensive end Dion Jordan impressive in workouts

Sporting News has a look at the Winners and Losers of the NFL Combine.

Jordan looks to be a potential first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft for a team in need. His former coach is even paying attention.

Jan. 3, 2013; Glendale, AZ, USA: Oregon Ducks running back Kenjon Barner (24) against the Kansas State Wildcats during the 2013 Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Former Oregon Running Back Kenjon Barner is also looking to the NFL. His 40 yard dash time was 4.52 seconds, whcih was good enough for 6th place in the NFL Combine, but he impressed with his speed, quickness and ability to catch the ball in other drills at the NFL Combine.

One site has Barner ranked as between the 3rd and 8th best running backs in this year’s draft.

Offensive Lineman Kyle Long was also invited to the NFL Combine to show his skill for the next level. The son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long, some are saying that he has worked his way back to being an NFL prospect. Long did set a 40 yard dash time of 4.94, which is considered good for an Offensive Lineman. He did nothing to decrease his stock during the Combine.

Former Oregon Linebacker Kiko Alonso did not run the 40 yard dash due to an injury. He is seen as a mid level draft pick, somewhere between the 4th and 7th rounds by NFL.com

John Boyett, who missed most of his senior season due to surgeries to repair his legs is at the NFL Combine today. This morning he showed off some upper body strength with an impressive 27 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press, which is among the leaders on the day. As far as running it’s not known what he will be able to do the rest of today. NFL Scouts like Boyett, but one sees him as a second day pick or a free agent.

Players not invited to the NFL Combine, including Linebacker Michael Clay will have their workouts on campus at the University of Oregon March 14th.

If you are true to the saying ‘Hard Work Pays Off’ then you will be rewarded. For several Oregon players it came in the way of being invited to what is becoming one of the more popular events before the Draft, the NFL Combine.

The NFL Combine, which puts players through numerous tests of strength and endurance, as well as interviews with NFL personnel, is from February 20th-26th at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Home of the Indianapolis Colts.

According to the schedule, upon arrival each athlete will undergo xrays and a medical exam and psychological testing before several days worth of interviews and finally an on the field ‘exam’ on their final day.

“I’ve watched the combine for years dreaming of the opportunity to participate in it. It’s coming up and it’s my turn! <s>#</s>blessed“

Offensive Lineman Kyle Long via Twitter

Long, who suffered from chemical dependency before transferring to Oregon was denied a 5th year of eleigibility by the NCAA, so for him to be going to the combine is a perfect opportunity for him to increase his draft stock.

The way the schedule is mapped out, in some senses you have to be a rocket scientist to figure out who goes first at what…and on what day. It just so happens that Long will be in group that arrives first, his on field workouts will be on February 23rd.

Running Back Kenjon Barner will have his run at the NFL Combine on Sunday, February 24th. Dion Jordan and Kiko Alonso,on Monday, February 25th.

Many remember John Boyette for having ended his senior season before it began, needed to have multiple surgeries with his knees. During the final game this past season, he participated in Senior Day festivities at Autzen Stadium and at first sight seemed to be walking without a limp. It is not clear how much Boyette will participate in the NFL Combine events.

Oregon’s Pro Day for players not invited to the Combine is March 14th.

The NFL Combine will be broadcast on NFL Network.

Yesterday, Oregon Ducks fans received the devastating news that confirmed our worst fears; junior safety Avery Patterson is out for the year with an ACL tear. Patterson suffered the injury on Saturday in the victory against the California Golden Bears, after he went down hard on his knee trying to make a tackle on Cal’s star running back Isi Sofele.

The Ducks already saw one of their star safeties suffer a season-ending knee injury, and that was veteran All Pac-12 standout John Boyett. Many wondered if the Ducks could play well without him; let alone fully replace him.

Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

But that’s exactly what Avery Patterson was able to do. He did something that was nearly impossible, and that was replacing Boyett and making the transition at the key rover safety position seamless. Patterson plays the run as well as any safety in college football, and he also played himself into All Pac-12 consideration. He has a nose for the ball, but mostly, a nose for the ball-carrier and did an excellent job filling the leadership void back there.

Now, the Ducks will have to face life without both of their star safeties, and it’s also testing their depth. Sensational running back De’Anthony Thomas will even be getting snaps in the secondary to fill in the lost depth, and Oregon will certainly be tested now that they are down to the third man back there.

Thomas should be able to succeed back there due to his athleticism, and the fact that he was coveted at CB coming out of high school as the top prospect in the west overall. However, you never want to send a sophomore back there to get back into a position that he hasn’t played in two years; let alone played at the collegiate level.

The loss of Patterson is actually greater than Boyett, and it is easy to see why. The drop-off between Boyett and Patterson isn’t as huge as the drop-off between Patterson and sophomore Erick Dargan at free safety. Dargan has a huge task ahead of him against the Stanford Cardinal, and it’s a good thing Stanford is much better at running the football than passing. That does mean Dargan will have to try and make up for the loss in run support in the secondary as best he can, especially since Patterson and Boyett were so good in that role.

Oregon might also be without the always reliable DTs Wade Keliikipi and Taylor Hart against Stanford, with the loss of the former being a devastating blow to the team’s run defense. Sadly, all the injuries (Kenjon Barner, Dion Jordan, Marcus Mariota, and other DTs are injured) mean that Oregon’s battle for a national championship has become an uphill one. At this point, they might not even be better than Kansas State due to injuries, with the loss of Patterson for the season being especially painful.

Let’s hope Patterson can make a full recovery heading into next season and continue to work his way into a solid draft grade.

When he cried on his way to the locker room, I almost lost it. I know most Ducks fans felt the same way as well. At that point, I think we all knew that Patterson was done for the year. And yet, I still can’t believe it.
