It’s time to take a look at the Pac 12 and Wide Receivers as we head into the 2013 College Football Season. Lisa Horne from Bleacher Report shares her thoughts on the subject.

As usual there is a familiar team at the top in USC, but with Matt Barkley graduated and in the NFL, will these talented young men be able to find someone who can get them the ball? Second on the list is Washington. Horne says the Huskies may have a Heisman Darkhorse:

Austin Seferian-Jenkins may be a Heisman finalist dark horse. He is that good. Last season Seferian-Jenkins had 69 receptions for 852 yards and seven touchdowns.

The third best receiving group in the Pac 12 is Oregon(ranked ahead of Stanford). The Ducks are led by Josh Huff. One thing you may not know is that the Ducks have 16 wideouts on their roster according to Horne. I, personally think you can’t have enough players at that position and if you throw in De’Anthony Thomas. Look Out.

Other notables on her list include Oregon State(5), Utah(7), Stanford(8), Arizona(9) and Colorado at the bottom at 12.

In his lastest updated Pac 12 Post Spring game rankings ESPN’s Ted Miller has gone with the team with an experienced head coach at the top. It’s not Mark Helfrich. It’s David Shaw. Stanford is at the top of the Post Spring(game) rankings. He took into account Oregon’s coaching changes as a big factor in the decision to put the Ducks in 2nd place.

Here is what Miller had to say about Oregon:

While Stanford and Oregon feel like 1A and 1B, you have to account for the uncertainty of the Ducks’ changing coaches, particularly when it’s one with as big a presence as Chip Kelly. The returning talent, including Heisman Trophy hopeful Marcus Mariota at quarterback, is strong on both sides of the ball.

April 13, 2013; Stanford, CA, USA; Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw instructs his team after the Cardinal

Stanford is on top because they have no holes to fill and plenty of experience returning in the Fall. Of course, who could forget they also beat Oregon last season at Autzen. The Cardinal will be even stronger this season and Oregon has to travel to Palo Alto to face them.

Of course, we haven’t even played a game yet and I’m sure these rankings, like all the rest that come out in the preseason will ebb and flow as we roll on.

There were four Pac-12 games on the college football slate last night, featuring Utah, UCLA, Washington State, and Arizona State. Here is how each team fared in their first game of the 2012 season.

Utah Defeats Northern Colorado, 41-0

It was a huge opening win for the Utah Utes which showcases the defense on the scoreboard, but the offense showed up as well. The biggest star for the Utes came in the form of running back, John White. White rushed for 119 yards on 24 carries. He also had a five-yard touchdown run in the last seconds of the first half. Jordan Wynn started at quarterback for Utah. He recorded 200 passing yards on nineteen completions. He threw for two touchdowns (both of them to Jake Murphy). Joe Kruger capped off the night with a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown. Utah could be a huge surprise team in the Pac-12 this year.

BYU Defeats Washington State, 30-6

Aug 30, 2012; Provo, UT, USA; Washington State Cougars head coach Mike Leach (center) talks to his players during the second quarter against the Brigham Young Cougars at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The first game of the 2012 season was not kind to Mike Leach as he began his campaign with the Washington State Cougars. The best word to describe the Cougar offense in their season opener would be sluggish. Their offense could not score a single touchdown and they had a net rushing yard total of negative-five yards. Jeff Tuel started the game at quarterback for WSU and threw two interceptions. The star for BYU was quarterback, Riley Nelson. Nelson recorded 285 passing yards on twenty-five completions and two touchdowns.

UCLA Defeats Rice, 49-24

Just like in the Utah game, this game was all about a Pac-12 running back. Jonathan Franklin had a tremendous game in the UCLA opener against the Rice Owls. Franklin rushed for 214 yards on fifteen carries, and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdowns were 70+ touchdowns. The redshirt freshman, Brett Hundley, started the game at quarterback for the Bruins. He recorded 202 passing yards on twenty-one completions and two passing touchdowns. Hundley also opened the scoring for the Bruins with a 78-yard touchdown run. Most importantly, this win in the first for Jim Mora as head coach of the UCLA Bruins.

Arizona State Defeats Northern Arizona, 63-6

The post-Brock Osweiler began in Tempe as the Sun Devils took on the Lumberjacks. Taylor Kelly took over as the new starting quarterback for the Todd Graham-era. He recorded 247 passing yards on fifteen completions, and he threw for one touchdown. The best word to describe Kelly’s perform is efficient. Marion Grice also had a big day for ASU as he rushed for 107 yards and had three rushing touchdowns. ASU’s defense was great as well as they knocked out Northern Arizona’s quarterback and leading rusher in the first half.

The main storyline of the day was new coaching era beginning in the Pac-12. It worked out for some and it did not work out for others.
