Starting Pitcher Cheridan Hawkins was named Pac 12 Pitcher of the Week after earning two of three wins on the week, including a 10-3 win over the Cardinal(last weekend) and a 4-2 win over the Huskies(Friday). In her second complete game of the year on Friday she logged 7 strikeouts with two hits and two walks in 7 innings.

It’s the third Pitcher of the Week honor for Hawkins and her second in a row.

Turning to offense for the other Player of the Week, Junior Kailee Cuico led the team in homeruns(3), RBI(6) and slugging percentage over the past week. She hit a home run in 3 of 4 games versus the Huskies and leads the team in several categories including, multi-RBI games (12), homers (10), RBI (34) and total bases (64).

The Ducks return home to Howe Field to face Utah for three games (Tuesday, 3pm(Doubeheader), and Wednesday at 11:30, before heading south to face California for a two game set this weekend.

To open the weekend series on Thursday(it was a day earlier due to Easter Sunday), Oregon turned to Pitcher Jake Reed who was on his mark early pitching a shutout after two innings, with a 2 run lead as the Ducks scored in the first inning. Then things got interesting. As the pitch count  increased his pitches were higher in the strike zone, and Washington made contact. Reed did settle in for 8 inning of work allowing three runs, two earned on five hits and striking out five. First Baseman Ryon Healy came to the plate in the 10th and decided it was time for everyone to go home hitting a pitch over the left field fence as Oregon won 5-3.

Friday evening’s contest did not have as much in the way of offensive fireworks, but there was just enough for the Ducks. Pitcher Tommy Thorpe held Washington to just three hits and no runs in 8 innings, and Closer Jimmy Sherfy locked it up as Oregon won 1-0. That single run was not easy to come by. Freshman Josh Graham put Oregon on the scoreboard with a hit in the bottom of the second and that was all they would need. The Ducks tried to score again in the 7th, but Kevin Minjares was thrown out at home plate on a soft grounder to short by Tyler Baumgartner. Washington Pitcher Austin Voss took the loss of the Cougars after allowing 1 hit in 7 innings of work.

Saturday was a similar story for the Ducks. Oregon turned to Freshman Cole Irvin on the mound who pitched not only a shutout, but a complete game. It was the first complete game by a Ducks pitcher this season going 9 innings and allowing just four hits and striking out a season high 11. Oregon picked up two quick runs in the first inning, Steven Packard scored Ryon Healy on a squeeze bunt from 3rd. It was just the fourth time this year they have scored out of the gate.

Oregon’s offense was at it again in the 4th adding four runs pretty much sealing the game for the Ducks. First Baseman Ryon Healy after his Thursday night heroics went 3-4 with two RBI’s and run scored. Connor Hoffman was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored as Oregon swept the Huskies.

The Ducks now hit the road for a weekend series at Arizona State starting on Friday.

Oregon After Their 5-3 Walkoff Win vs Washington on March 28th, 2013

It was a perfect night for baseball at PK Park and the intimate crowd that showed up for the first game of the series vs Pac 12 Rival Washington was treated to quite a show in the end. I heard people remarking at it was a ‘fun’ baseball game, and it was – the crowd was into it from the beginning.

When the evening began for Oregon Starting Pitcher Jake Reed he was lights out. The ball hitting the catchers mit with authority. He received a gift from the Ducks offense in the way of two runs in the first inning, just the third time this season Oregon scored that early in a contest. In the Top of the 4th things began to unravel. His pitches started to rise and Washington Hitters were making contact. In the fifth Washington took the lead 3-2, but Oregon has a secret weapon, one that hasn’t been seen since the finale against Vanderbilt. Call me crazy, but it’s the Techno Chicken. Fro some reason it’s what the Ducks need to mount a rally.

Ryon Healy hit a RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 3, and Closer Jimmie Sherfy came in to shut the door in the 9th. The Ducks could not break through in the bottom of the 9th, so the game went to extra innings.

The Ducks were able to hold off the Huskies in the Top of the 10th. Enter Tyler Baumgarner, who picked up a hit and was able to extend the inning for Ryon Healy – who already had several hits on the night. He cranked a two run walk off homerun over the left field wall to win it for the Ducks, the first walkoff since Oregon returned to baseball in 2009.

For the game, Pitcher Jake Reed had an up and down performance, managed 8 innings, giving up two earned runs, and striking out five. Closer Jimmie Sherfy picked up his second win of the season.

Oregon continues the three game series tonight with Tommy Thorpe taking the mound for the Ducks. First pitch at 6pm.
