Sophomore Darron Thomas had his worst performance of the season against Cal, completing 15 of 29 passes for 155 yards and only one touchdown. The last few games, Thomas’s numbers have not been as high as they were at the start of the season. The truth is Thomas is not slowing down, but instead getting better and making better decisions.
Thomas has completed 167 of 273 pass attempts this season for 2225 yards, which is a completion percentage of 61.5%. He has also thrown 23 touchdowns compared to only 6 interceptions. Thomas is making good decisions when under center. With Center Jordan Holmes anchoring a veteran line, Thomas is able to read the defense effectively and find his receivers on the outside.
Thomas has rushed 78 times this season for 434 yards and 4 touchdowns. These are impressive numbers, especially for a QB that has Barner and James behind him and multiple weapons to check the ball down to. The biggest stat is the number that is missing, 0 fumbles. Thomas is making excellent reads in zone runs and when he hangs onto the football, he is careful to secure it and get out of bounds when he is running.
Keep in mind Thomas is starting his first full season at the helm of the Oregon offense. Coming into the season, Masoli was the starter and Thomas and Costa were going to be the backups. But after the Masoli debacle, Thomas shined in Spring and hasn’t looked back since. He is playing like a veteran starter out there, with his athletic ability and also his decision making.
Enough can’t be said about the playmaking and decision making of Thomas. He is only getting better each week and has the high powered Oregon offense rolling and there are very few that can get in their way.
