Oklahoma beats Oregon Ducks 3-2

Day two of the Nike College Showcase yielded another loss for the Oregon Ducks, as the No. 22 Oklahoma Sooners dropped the No. 17 Oregon Ducks 3-2. However, the Ducks did route West Virginia in the first game of the day 12-0.

The now 11-3 Oregon Ducks received 6.2 innings from Jake Reed, who yielded five hits and two runs with 12 grounders but was charged with the loss. This was because 2-2 Jonathan Gray was magnificent in seven innings of two-run ball, as the Sooners starter mowed down ten hitters on strikes. Jordan John notched his third save of the season in two innings of one-hit ball to help OU beat OU.

Jimmie Sherfy had another big outing for the Ducks, as he struck out four batters and allowed just one hit in the final 1.2 frames of baseball. He has been the team’s MVP to this point and showed it with another quality outing. The Sooners held on in the bottom of the ninth of the game after the Oregon Ducks tried to mount a comeback, but J.J. Altobelli’s pop-out sealed the deal for Oklahoma.

Altobelli, however, had another strong outing for the Oregon Ducks in a 2-5 game at the plate with a run and an RBI, and number two hitter Aaron Payne also went 2-5 and drove in a run. The double play partners were the only two players on the team with multi-hit games. The Oregon Ducks struck out 14 times as a team- a season-high- with Scott Heineman and Kyle Garlick leading the way with three strikeouts apiece.
