Oregon Offers Danny Friend, Illinois Tight End
By Brian Spaen
It’s been 44 days since Danny Friend, tight end/offensive tackle from Morris, Illinois, has received an offer from a school. Oregon gives him his fifth offer, shooting him into the 2013 recuriting rankings.
According to a tweet from Allen Trieu (@AllenTrieu) and an article from Steve Wiltfong on 247sports, the 6-foot-5, 240-pound prospect received his offer today from the Ducks. He becomes the school’s 29th player to reach out to.
The offer also puts him in the rankings for multiple recruiting services. 247sports has him now listed as a three-star recruit and 29th overall in the tight end position. Scout has him at 24th.
Other offers the player received are from Central Michigan, Indiana, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan. Considering where he has played and the schools being offered, this was a huge shock to see Oregon actually giving him an offer. With this pushing him into the recruiting spotlight, it will be interesting to see what other schools will look into him, especially out in the west.
In his junior season, Friend played both tight end and defensive end on the Morris Redskins. On offense, he caught 18 catches for 262 yards and five touchdowns. He had 34 total tackles, had three fumble recoveries, and forced two on the defensive side. Looking at his highlight video, it’s clear that his length gave him a clear advantage in one-on-one coverage in the endzone. The question will be how that will compare in the next level and if he can use his size to avoid tackles better.
