Ducks’ Head Coach Faces Former Team
By Brian Spaen
George Horton is in the midst of his most successful season as Oregon’s baseball head coach. His old team he spent 11 years with, Cal State Fullerton, will be on the opposing side tonight at PK Park.
Following the 26-year hiatus, it was announced in 2007 that the Ducks baseball club would be reinstated in Division I. Horton was hired in the same year, and began the process of developing the team and began play in 2009.
They’ve already been in the regionals once two years ago. Now with a national ranking and hosting a regional, Horton would like to keep it going. Just like he did with his old ball club in Fullerton, California.
In those 11 years with the Titans, six of them ended in the College World Series. The 2004 season saw them come home with the title. Not one season did they finish below fifth in their conference, and they saw the postseason in all of the seasons with Horton at the helm.
Now enters Rick Vanderhook, currently in his first season at CSF, who looks to keep the winning tradition going after Dave Serrano left to the Tennessee Volunteers. Vanderhook served as the assistant coach under Horton for all those 11 years.
Needless to say, emotions will rise between both Horton and Vanderhook. It will be up to the teams to deliver, and for Oregon to keep the momentum they found in the bottom of the ninth yesterday going for Horton to move on past his old team.
