It was the first preseason game in the Bay Area in anticipation of the 2013 season and the night started out with the ball in the hands of one man. Former Duck LaMichael James took the first handoff and play of the preseason from Colin Kaepernick in a drive that came up short but gave San Francisco a field goal and an early 3-0 lead. For the night James went 8 for 27 and was matched by Anthony Dixon who also rushed for 27 yards on the night but in 7 attempts. Dixon was a sixth round pick in 2010 from Mississippi State.

The game gave coaches an early look at players but didn’t need to see much of 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick or Denver starting QB Peyton Manning. Colt McCoy(formerly of the Cleveland Browns) went 3/7 for 41 yards and an interception. Kaepernick was 4 for 4 for 38 yards.  Scott Tolzien, in his third year in the league drafted from Wisconsin went 15 for 26 for 158 yards on the night and to me looked like the backup QB in the early running this preseason.

Next week San Francisco travels to Kansas City to face the Chiefs. Kickoff is set for 5pm Pacific Time.
