Oregon took care of business at home on Saturday beating Nicholls State 66-3. Now they head on the road to Charlottsville Virginia to take on the Virginia Cavaliers from the ACC. In their first game the Cavs beat BYU by a Field Goal 19-16. Offensively the numbers against the Ducks don’t match up. Oregon had 772 yards of Offense vs Nicholls State. Virginia had just 332 yards of Offense against BYU, but Virginia Head Coach Mike London sees some needed improvement in the week ahead according to an interview from ACC All Access Writer Norm Wood.
"“We’re definitely going to have to do better than (they did against BYU in stopping the run) – tighten up our own responsibilities in terms of running back, quarterback and filling the gaps the way that we need to”Virginia Coach Mike London on the Ducks"
Five hundred yards of Offense on a stat sheet is enough to get anyone’s attention, especially since the ball was spread out between quite a few players including three players that each had over 100 yards rushing last Saturday including Running Back De’Anthony Thomas, Quarterback Marcus Mariota and Running Back Byron Marshall.
London’s Quarterback David Watford isn’t as seasoned as Oregon’s Mariota with the last game (BYU) being his first career start. With what we’re used to in Oregon’s QB’s over the last few years his numbers may seem a little low. Last weekend he went 18 for 32 with 116 yards in the air with a touchdown and an interception. On his young Quarterback the Virginia head coach says it’s going to take time.
"“He’ll carry the ball some in this offense. Sometimes with the quarterback, you want to teach them either they have to go down, get out of bounds or instead of trying to reverse field, just take what you can get and go down. Sometimes by being so athletic, he wants to try to make a play or he extends the play by trying to cut across the grain, so those are all learning things. David will learn as we go on here.”Virginia Coach Mike London on His QB’s Performance"
