The season has started for the Oregon Women’s Volleyball team and their opening week with a Tournament, The Oregon Classic. It featured four teams including the Ducks, Ohio, Bryant, and Eastern Washington.
Alaina Bergsma may be gone for Oregon Volleyball, but the Ducks 2013 season started out on the right foot with victories over Eastern Washington and Bryant. Sophomore Outside Hitter Martenne Bettendorf had a career high 18 kills against Eastern Washington last Friday evening. It was a three game sweep for the Ducks. The Ducks then defeated Bryant on Saturday in three sets before falling to Ohio and taking second place in the tournament.
"“They played very well and at the end, the got loose. We have to make sure that we execute when we’ve got opportunities. We didn’t do that very much tonight.”Oregon Coach Jim Moore on the loss to Ohio"
The Ducks fell a few spots in the first AVCA Coaches Poll of the season(from 9th-12th). Oregon was able to rebound with a Tuesday win vs Portland State winning in three sets. Sophomore Outside Hitter Canace Finley had a big game for Oregon setting a career marks for kills (11), hitting percentage (.588), and points (13.5) while also getting in on five block assists.
This season Oregon returns several key pieces from last year’s National Runner Up team including Junior Outside Hitter and multiple sport athlete Liz Brenner along with Senior Setter Lauren Plum.
The Ducks now travel east to Michigan to face Michigan State on Friday in the Hokie Invitational (4pm PT, Big Ten Network/BTN.com) and Saturday they take on Michigan in the Big 10/Pac 12 Challenge(11am PT). The game will be webcast.
