The game on Saturday night between the Cal Bears and Oregon Ducks was supposed to be an aerial display between two of the Top Quarterbacks in the Pac 12. However, mother nature had a different idea. Oregon was first to recieve the ball and Running Back De’Anthony Thomas took the runback 27 yards and injured his ankle in the process. He did not return to the field and was seen starting the second half on crutches on the sideline. The Ducks do not report on injuries so his future status is not known.
In the first quarter mother nature gave Autzen Stadium her best shot with swirling winds and rain and a deluge of water. Golden Bears Freshman Quarterback Jared Goff, who led the nation in all purpose passing yards with 473 per contest wasn’t able to do much of anything. For the game he went 3 for 7 for a total of 11 yards before being replaced with fellow Freshman Zach Kline who had a little better success against the Ducks, but not much.
Oregon on the other hand lived up to their name. The Ducks were able to move the ball both on the ground and in the air against Cal. Quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for two touchdowns and over 100 yards. However the game ball went to Wide Receiver Bralon Addison, who caught a few passes from Mariota but was stellar in two punt returns for touchdowns averaging 71 yards.
Oregon’s Quarterback was able to get the ball to Daryle Hawkins and Josh Huff for scores and even added a two yard run himself.
At halftime Oregon was up on Cal 41-3 and the Stadium cleared out. Cal’s Jeffery Copich was able to score for the Bears to make it 55-10. At that point, Oregon Backup Quarterback Jeff Lockie entered the game midway through the third quarter. One player who picked up some solid game experience was Freshman Running Back Thomas Tyner. The star recruit scored a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
Cornerback Ifo Ekpre Olomu who has been solid tackling in the first three games of 2013 intercepted his first ball of the season vs Cal. Oregon has also scored 50+ points in four straight games for the first time in school history with the victory over the Bears.
The Ducks next head to Colorado and a date with the Buffaloes next Saturday. (3:30pm PT, Pac 12 Networks)
