Former Oregon Ducks Eaton and Symmonds Among Finalists for 2013 Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award

Former Oregon Duck and current Olympic Gold Medal Decathalon Champion Ashton Eaton has made the list of nominees for the 2013 Jessee Owens Athlete of the Year Award. He is joined on the ballot by another former Duck Nick Symmonds. Both former Ducks played a big part on the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene. Eaton’s performance in less than perfect weather the first few days of the Trials were the story of the event. He took the momentum to London where he took gold in the Decathalon.

Symmonds also had success at the Olympic Trials. He currently holds the American record in the 800 meters at 1:43.03 and has five runnings that are sub 1:44. The former Duck recently took second place in the 800 meters in the Brussels Diamond League Meet.

Other nominees on the Men’s side include Justin Gatlin(100 meters), LeShawn Merritt(400 meters), David Oliver(110 meter Hurdles), and Ryan Whiting(Shotput), and Michael Tinsley(400 meter Hurdles). On the Women’s side the nominees include Brigetta Barrett(High Jump), Mary Cain(1500 meters), Michelle Carter(Shotput), Brianna Rollins(100 meter Hurdles), Brittney Reese(Long Jump), Jenny Simpson(1500 meters), and Jenn Surr(Pole Vault)

Voting will be open until Friday October 18th at Midnight according to the US Track and Field Website.

Hayward Field has again been chosen to host the Olympic Trials for the Summer Olympics in 2016.
