Oregon Softball Faces Washington to Start 2014 Home Schedule
Howe Field, University of Oregon, KPNW Sports
When it comes to sports there is one that seems to be somewhat more unique than others. In College Baseball the non conference schedule may play host to a tournament or two before three game series against teams across the country. College Football has teams travelling, in some cases, across the US to face an opponent. College Softball tops them all. Oregon has quite the travel resume since starting the season ranked 10th in the country on February 7th.
Five tournaments and twenty plus foes later, including the #1 team in the country, Florida and a Pac-12 opponent last weekend in Utah the Oregon Softball team is finally opening their home schedule at Howe Field This Weekend, weather permitting of course…it is Eugene after all. The Ducks are now ranked 2nd in the nation and play host to Washington for a three game series and like the Oregon Baseball team had a milestone reached on Tuesday.
Oregon Head Coach Mike White not only has his team off to their best start since 2007, on Tuesday he reached 200 career wins as the Ducks Coach with a win over Southern Utah. Several players have been the key to Oregon’s 27-4 start including First Baseman Kaley Cuico who hit her 38th career home run on Tuesday making her the Oregon All-Time Home Run Leader. She needs just 18 more RBIs this season to own that mark as well. Senior Catcher Alexa Peterson, was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week last week for her efforts in a three game sweep of Utah . She hit .857 with 13 RBI’s going 6 for 7 at the plate with five runs, a triple, and a grand slam. Not a bad weekend of work.
These are two players to watch this weekend and the Ducks return to Howe Field. Oregon(27-4, 3-0 Pac-12) takes on Washington(21-7, 2-3 Pac-12) on Friday(3pm PT), Saturday(3pm PT), and Sunday(3pm PT). All games will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
