Pac-12/DirecTV Update: No News is…Well, No News

Pac-12 fans across the country will not be happy to hear that the Pac-12 Network is really no closer to a deal with satellite provider DirecTV then they were a year ago. PacificTakes.com is reporting that in a recent conversation Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott is not too concerned about the Pac-12 footprint with DirecTV.

Scott prefers to take a look at the bigger picture, citing other deals that have been made with, for example, the SEC Network and ESPN and the revenue sharing that is involved in that deal. Since the Pac-12 Network is more than one channel, such a deal would not be beneficial with another large satellite provider, allowing the network to be very fluid right now when it comes to cash flow.

As it stands with owning the network themselves, the Pac-12 Conference is able to control their own destiny, rather than pairing with an entity like ESPN. Over time I also believe this is the best for the Pac-12 Network, who will find their own global reach when the time comes. According to the article it is just a matter of time before the tables turn on DirecTV. Over the next several years non conference matchups will become more relevant – take this past week’s Michigan State vs Oregon matchup. Sooner the Pac-12 Network will get the rights to a premiere game.

When that happens and DirecTV viewers cannot see the game because they don’t carry the network they may begin to care about Pac-12 Network and rethink their strategy. Speaking of Pac-12 Network, the game this week against Wyoming will be carried starting at 11am Pacific Time.
