Oregon Football: ESPN’s Todd McShay Weighs In On Ducks Coaching Search

ESPN Analyst Todd McShay gave an honest opinion on the Oregon Ducks, and many will not like what he said.

The National Media can sometimes be cruel, other times they make a lot of sense, but ESPN College Football Analyst Todd McShay hit the perception on the Oregon Ducks Football team out of the park earlier this week.

Speaking on Rusillo and Kanell, McShay broke down the situation with the firing of Head Coach Mark Helfrich. He said that Oregon is not special anymore and needs to basically start from scratch. He bashed recruiting in the Pacific Northwest saying it was difficult.

Todd McShay was blunt but honest in his assessment saying that Oregon needs to tear down the old model and start fresh. I have been echoing the same sentiments. The issue with the program is not necessarily the individual players or the team, but more how the new coach can be effective at recruiting for the future, wanting to be at Oregon himself and showing that Oregon ‘wants’ respective recruits.

One program trumps McShay’s comments that gives some hope. The Washington Huskies are on the inside rung of the College Football Playoff ranked 4h in the nation and Chris Petersen has been a proven recruiting maching in th Pacific Northwest – so it can be done.

As far as tearing it down and starting over. The Oregon Ducks System worked – for a LONG time. Over the last few years other programs in the Pac-12 Conference have emulated the Ducks and have also done better at recruiting. Oregon needs an all around-package of a Head Coach.

Mark Helfrich finished his career at 37-16 and was fired. The hometown fans will need to exercise a lot of patience in the next few seasons, regardless of who lands the job. I just hope that Rob Mullens and the Boosters also show patience. It will take time for Oregon Football to get back to winning seasons and be in College Football Playoff contention.
