Ole Miss is a mess and on Thursday Head Coach Hugh Freeze resigned after documents showed a call from a work cell phone were made to a non-work related number.

Earlier this year, former Oregon Football and NFL Head Coach Chip Kelly signed a contract with ESPN to be a commentator for both College and NFL shows on the network starting in the Fall, but his heart is in Coaching. Almost immediately his name rose toward the top of the list of potential candidates to replace Freeze at Ole Miss.

Kelly has some familiarity in working with and through NCAA Sanctions. He was hit with some when he was with Oregon Football. However, when you go to the SEC, Ole Miss is not the school that jumps off the page. Could he find success there? With a stellar 46-7 record in four seasons of College Football, sure. But if I were Kelly, I would stay away.

There are a bevy on Sanctions at Ole Miss, not to mention the possible additional sanctions for Freeze’s actions that forced his resignation. With Kelly building a program from the ground up, he is likely looking for a big landing spot. A school without sanctions where he can build talent his way.

Kelly should take the season and a few checks from ESPN to survey the landscape of both the NFL and College Football. There is no doubt that television is a short term answer for Chip Kelly. He is a coach, the level of where does not matter. He will find a higher profile position in the coming season in College or the National Football League.
