Former Oregon Football Coach Mark Helfrich Lands With Chicago Bears
Former Oregon Football Head Coach Mark Helfrich enters the National Football League with the Chicago Bears.
Mark Helfrich is a smart guy. He has bided his time after he was fired following a 4-8 season a year ago. On Thursday, it was announced that Helfrich will join the Chicago Bears Coaching Staff as Offensive Coordinator. Helfrich thrived as Offensive Coordinator at Oregon under Head Coach Chip Kelly helping lead the team to three successful seasons and a National Championship.
Chicago Head Coach Matt Nagy will likely run a similar Offense in Chicago as he had in Kansas City this season. Helfrich is the perfect Coach and could make things more interesting for Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky who has a similar skill set to former Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Spread Option was a key factor in the success of Oregon Football from 2009-2012.
Nagy and Helfrich could find similar success in the National Football League with the right personnel. The NFL Draft will tell a lot about what the new Chicago Bears Offense will look like. As it stands now, Chicago is in line for the 8th Overall Pick which will clearly be a pick for the Offense.
Helfrich was 37-16 with Oregon Football and this is his first stint in the NFL. With his experience at the College Level and getting a Coordinator Position, all the pressure is off. He is not a Head Coach, but Nagy is an Offensive Mind and the collaboration between the two could lead to good things in the City of Chicago in the coming years.
