Oregon Softball: Gwen Svekis Leads Offense In Win Over Georgia

The Oregon Ducks did not wait long to open the scoring in the Kajikawa Classic en route to an 8-3 win over Georgia.

For the Oregon Ducks, it has been a long offseason of what if’s following their loss in the Women’s College World Series Semi-Final. Gwen Svekis has already put it behind her in the offseason and hit a two-run home run to center field to open the 2017 season giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead against Georgia.

Oregon Starting Pitcher Megan Kleist threw six innings giving up six hits and three earned runs. She struck out six. The Oregon Offense did not let up from the start. Following a two run homerun by Gwen Svekis, the Ducks went on to hit .379 for the game and at a .400 clip with two outs.

Oregon Ducks Leadoff Hitter Alexis Mack was 2 for 5. Shannon Rhodes went 2 for 3 with a double and a home run for the Ducks.

Georgia pitching gave up 11 runs and 8 hits over seven innings. Megan Kleist held the Bulldogs to one hit, a home run, through four innings before she gave four hits and an additional two runs. Kleist earned the win, her first of the season in the 8-3 victory over 25th ranked Georgia.

The Bulldogs opened their season earlier in the day beating San Diego State 23-2 before facing Oregon.

The Kajikawa Classic continues on Friday for the Oregon Ducks with an early matchup with Fresno State. The (Fresno State) Bulldogs will face #3 Oregon to open their season Friday Morning. The Ducks will play a second game against the CSUN Matadors on Friday at 1 pm Pacific Time.
