Oregon Football: Linebacker Fotu Leiato Charged With Two Misdemeanors
Oregon Football has a player in trouble with law enforcement the week following the Spring Game.
Linebacker Fotu Leiato has been charged with two misdemeanors Wednesday night after removal of a parking boot on his vehicle according to the Eugene Register-Guard. The charges include second-degree criminal mischief and second-degree theft.
Leiato has been a consistent player off the field for Oregon Football since his arrival in 2015. He found early popularity on Hudl with his high school highlight video but has had several brushes with law enforcement this year. In January he was charged with trespassing and missed his court appearance on April 9 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
In his career he has been a model of consistency on the field playing in 38 of the 39 games since his arrival with the program. In his time, he has seen three different coaching changes and it is clear that 1st Year Head Coach Mario Cristobal has already laid out plans for what it means to be part of the ‘Men of Oregon’. Off the field disciplinary issues involving law enforcement will not be tolerated.
Cristobal released a statement following Leiato’s arrest, “We hold our student-athletes to high standards and will take appropriate action once all of the facts have been reviewed.”
The Senior Linebacker’s status is not known moving forward, but he was likely in line for a potential Starting Role with Oregon Football this fall. The situation is unfortunate if Fotu Leiato is released from the team. This is the first example for which the new Head Coach will have a decision to make concerning a player and their conduct off the field.
