Oregon Softball is looking for a new Head Coach after Mike White resigned to become the Head Coach at Texas on Monday.
In what could be seen as a shock for some, Mike White decided to leave Oregon Softball on Monday and will become the new Head Coach for the Texas Longhorns. White attributed the decision to ‘the right time in his career to make a move’ White has led the Oregon Ducks to the postseason in every year he spent in a Duck Uniform and boasts an undefeated NCAA Regional Record of 21-0.
The Oregonian spoke with White about his decision to leave Eugene. In his final season with Oregon Softball, White led the team to the NCAA Tournament behind to solid Starters in Megan Kleist in Miranda Elish. Elish found her zone late in the season and was able to get Oregon deep into the NCAA Tournament before the Oregon Ducks fell against Oklahoma.
With White leaving Oregon, it opens the door for possibly an Oregon Assistant to step in, or the Ducks could look outside for his replacement. There are plenty of options. Currently, Chelsea Spencer is interim Head Coach.
White said the decision to leave a program he took to the NCAA Tournament in eight of nine seasons ‘difficult’. It came down to financial security for his family according to the Oregonian. He said his interview with the Longhorns and their promise to what they were putting into the Softball Program were also factors.
In Eugene, White built the Oregon Ducks into a powerhouse in his nine seasons. After starting with Howe Field and turning it into Jane Sanders Stadium, Oregon was on the map to success. He is looking for a similar success with his new team.
