San Francisco Defensive Lineman Arik Armstead is starting the 2018 season in a familiar place, the Injury List.

Armstead made it through four practices before injuring a hamstring. According to Head Coach Mike Shanahan, it is a ‘serious’ injury that will keep the former Oregon Duck sidelined for the next month and the rest of the 49ers Training Camp leading up to the start of the Regular Season.

Arik Armstead had a bad track record for injury. Last season he missed all but six games due to a broken hand. He has been sidelined for eighteen games over the last two seasons but was given a contract extension in May. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the team picked up the fifth-year option on Armstead and will pay him just over $9 million this season.

Armstead has shown bursts of his potential in the National Football League but has not been consistently productive like he was in college, in part due to the injuries that have kept him off the field in the last two seasons. The hope was that 2018 would be a breakout year for the former Duck, and it still might be, but he will have to learn as he goes since he will miss all of Training Camp.

2018 7th Round Draft Pick Julian Taylor will be part of a group that will stand in for Armstead and get key experience during Camp. Taylor played with the Starters earlier this week as Coaches get a look and will have four weeks of the NFL Preseason to see who will likely be Arik Armstead’s backup at the position for the 2018 season.
