Oregon football looked all kinds of great last night against the previously ranked California Golden Bears, smacking them by a score of 42-24. As a result of the fantastic performance, the Ducks were rewarded in the polls — most importantly, the Associated Press. With another wild week of football under our belts, nearly every team ranked in the 20s got best and fell out of the rankings — meaning that there’s a fair few fresh faces in the Top 25 today.
As per usual, the SEC leads the way by having a five teams ranked. They also have a whopping five of the top thirteen (1. Alabama, 2. Georgia, 5. LSU, 8. Auburn, 13. Kentucky).
The Pac-12 is represented by a very respectable four teams (10. Washington, 14. Stanford, 18. Oregon, 21. Colorado), tied for second among conferences.
Okay, those are the numbers. Now, here’s what I think: Thank God we finally surpassed Texas. After beating two crappy and now unranked teams in USC and TCU, the committee saw fit to put them ahead of the Ducks. Pure absurdity. They lost to Maryland, and then scraped by an ugly Kansas State team this weekend. In my opinion, they don’t really deserve to be ranked and still haven’t proven themselves. Alas, they finally got wise and ranked Oregon ahead of them.
Also, can we just admire the SEC for a minute. I’m sooooo glad we play in the Pac-12 (still a very strong football conference) and not over there. Good gosh. One side of their conference has 3 teams in the top ten. Hell, even Kentucky looks like a legit top tier football squad.
Overall, I agree with the AP. That’s rare. But hey, I guess we finally watched the same football games this weekend.
