Each week we speak with Dave Bartoo from the College Football Matrix and this week he sees Oregon Football and Washington being one of the closest games of the year so far for both teams.

Despite having a loss against the Auburn early in the season, Washington rebounded and is still a top ten team entering their matchup against Oregon Football on Saturday at Autzen Stadium. Quarterback Jake Browning has been solid this season and the Huskies Defense have clamped down in the second half and are one of the best teams in the Pac-12 at making adjustments against opposing Offenses.

Earlier this week I spoke with Bartoo about the matchup and in looking at his numbers, Washington enters the game at 57th best in Offensive scoring efficiency but ranked 3rd overall in the country in Defense. For the Oregon Ducks, the numbers are improved from a season ago. The Ducks are 16th on Offense and 63rd on Defense.

As it has been in past weeks, Oregon Football will need to do most of their Offensive Damage in the first half, more specifically the first quarter against Washingon, “The big quarter. Oregon needs to stay hot in the first quarter and have a lead going. The second quarter will be to minimize the damage. The Washington Defense steps up in the second quarter.”

For a team that at times this season has started sluggish, doing so on Saturday may well mean a loss. The second quarter is where Washington makes the most adjustments and they continue into the third quarter.

In the second half this season, it has pretty much been similar for both teams. According to the College Football Matrix the game could be won or lost in the first half, “Neither team is very good in the third quarter. They are not very Offensively dominant with the Defenses taking over.”
