Following Wednesday Practice, Oregon Football Head Coach Mario Cristobal acknowledged that Justin Herbert did work with the team.
It was late in the game last Saturday that Herbert sustained the possible concussion. He, along with Wide Receiver Dillon Mitchell have been in concussion protocol since Monday. Cristobal said the timeline for both differed slightly and his Wide Receiver should be out of protocol later in the day on Wednesday. It is not known if either will start or play against the UCLA Bruins on Saturday.
Cristobal also said that he is treating Herbert’s Protocol as if it were his ‘own son’ in determining along with him and the medical staff when the best time would be for him to return to the field. As we have seen in the past, concussions are nothing to be messed with and have cost some players in College Football their careers. The recovery time also can vary.
As it stands with Herbert seeing the field in practice, I expect he will play on Saturday, perhaps not start. For Dillon Mitchell, I’m not sure. It may be an opportunity calling for Jaylon Redd or Brendan Schooler to step up at Wide Receiver. Another Offensive weapon, Tight End Kano Dillon also looked good in practice on Wednesday according to Cristobal. He could give Herbert, Braxton Burmeister, or Tyler Shough another outlet and big target to pass to against the Bruins.
"Justin practiced today. He’s making sure he feels good in everything he is doing. We’ll see how he feels the rest of the week and make a decision on who is going to start the game.Cristobal on Concussion Protocol on Quarterback Justin Herbert."
