Too High
Michigan – The Wolverines clearly don’t have as much talent as they did a year ago. Charles Matthews will eventually develop into a go-to crunch-time scorer later in the season, but he still looks like last year’s edition. Until he and some of the role players take a step up on offense, this team can’t compete with most of the top 25.
Kansas State – They only played one game and the offense was sluggish and completely stagnant. In their matchup with Kennesaw State, Bruce Weber’s club had just seven players score–and only three of those seven scored more than 6. Not good. This team needs a bench that can score or they’ll be run out of the gym by Marquette in a few weeks.
Too Low
Buffalo – Please. They just won at West Virginia! College Basketball Teams Not Named Kansas do not do that! C’mon AP! Just because Buffalo is a mid-major and wasn’t ranked in the preseason doesn’t mean they aren’t one of the 10-20 best teams in the country. With CJ Massinburg, Jeremy Harris and Nick Perkins, Nate Oats’ squad can and will do damage against Power programs. Ask Bob Huggins.
Auburn – Besides Duke, no one has looked more impressive than Auburn. They just pummeled a stingy Washington zone and racked up 88 points in route to a 22 point pounding. Bruce Pearl’s club plays exhilarating defense and makes a TON of threes. This club should be comfortably in the top 5–anyone who actually watches the games would agree.
