Too High
Kansas State – Frankly, KSU hasn’t been impressive so far. On defense, as predicted, they’ve been solid. Buckets aren’t easy to come by. They’re working teams on that end: shutting off cuts, defending the pick-and-roll well and bullying the lesser competition on the glass. Typical Bruce Weber stuff. But that’s not the phase of their game I was concerned about. It’s the offense. For the majority of 2018, the Wildcats were abysmal in terms of scoring ability. Until Xavier Sneed morphed into Klay Thompson during the Tournament, their ability to go on one of those 14-2/10-0 runs in two minutes was non-existent. So far this year, the same inability to light it up. Count me as someone who’s skeptical of the Cats.
Too Low
Iowa – Iowa just whipped us and UCONN–two very sound basketball teams–in a matter of two days. That’s impressive. Of the 20 teams ahead of the Hawkeyes, less than five have as impressive a resume. Fran McCaffery’s squad is veteran, gets stops defensively and shoots lights out from 3. They have deep-March potential and I think there’s a fascinating case to be made for them as a sleeper Big-10 champion.
Furman – Who? The Furman Paladins. Furman, over the span of two weeks, has won at Loyola-Chicago and at Villanova. For reference, that’s half of the 2018 Final Four. By the way, that’s a pretty damn good pair of wins. Even Jay Bilas is impressed. Go Paladins. And c’mon AP Voters! Put the Paladins in the rankings!
