Last week the University of Oregon and Oregon State University made a decision. Both schools will no longer refer to the annual game between the schools as the Civil War.

Since the announcement, fans have come out in both support of the change, as well as asking why. With the current political climate, it was clearly a time to make a change that will ultimately be better for both programs moving forward.

Fans on social media have come up with potential names for the game. One of the more popular ones was the Platypus Bowl. Some others that I saw included the game formerly known as the Civil War and the Toilet Bowl.

The Civil War matchup between the schools has been used since 1929 and will no longer be used for any sports between the schools. Oregon said in a statement that the decision ‘was a long time coming’ according to Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens.

Mullens said that former Oregon Football Quarterback Dennis Dixon raised the question concerning the name helping to push the change forward. Several players including former Ducks Tyson Coleman and Thomas Tyner were not happy about the change. Tyner added “I think it’s nothing but stupid. Coleman said, “It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, it is the Civil War.” Oregon State Wide Receiver Trevon Bradford said in a tweet that he thought it was one of the best named rivalry games in the country, but he also understood the reason for the change.

The final game of the season will now be known as something different. The meeting will still take place and will always have something on the line for both teams.

Oregon and Oregon State will meet for the 124th time this Fall in Corvallis with the 125th in state football matchup taking place next season at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
