Oregon has some depth at safety, but no true winner of the battle to start alongside Verone McKinley and even though Maurice Hampton is more of a free safety, too, he could be in line to contend for starting snaps.
Hampton transferred from LSU this offseason after being one of the top recruits in the 2019 class, ranked No. 129 overall. He was listed as a cornerback during his recruiting days and could probably be versatile enough to make that position change if need be, but the Ducks are loaded there and he’d be better off at safety.
Oregon never officially extended an offer to Hampton during the recruiting process, according to 247Sports, but he did have a last-minute visit planned before signing day with Oregon. Although things never came to fruition, Oregon showed some late interest in the then-LSU commit.
After just a couple of seasons with LSU, and recording a career-best 27 tackles and two tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2020, Hampton looks to have an immediate impact wherever he goes.
Oregon’s defense could always use more elite pieces.
