There’s no position group in the Pac-12 that will be focused on more in the coming weeks than Oregon football’s quarterback room.

There’s also no position battle in the conference that has a bigger bearing on the Pac-12 title race than the quarterback battle in Eugene. The conference title race runs through Eugene and if the Ducks can figure out their quarterback position, they will be the overwhelming favorites again.

Oregon has four quarterbacks vying for the starting job and Mario Cristobal just stated after Saturday’s scrimmage that he’s “close” to naming a starter.

He also stated that both Anthony Brown and Ty Thompson were impressive during the scrimmage along with Jay Butterfield and Robby Ashford is “getting better” which means that this might be a two or three-man race right now.

Thompson and Brown look like the favorites, especially after the freshman was the most impressive quarterback in the first scrimmage. If he hangs with Brown throughout the remainder of fall camp, he might just line up as QB1 when the Ducks kick off the 2021 season against Fresno State in a couple of weeks.

No position battle is more important in the entire conference than the quarterback duel at Oregon.

Who should win Oregon football’s starting job?

I’ve been pretty open about who I think Oregon should go with this fall.

But my tune has changed since the spring when I believed Ashford was the best man for the job. He looked like a breakout star and an explosive athlete, but after hearing Cristobal say that three quarterbacks were “impressive” during the scrimmage on Saturday and just saying Ashford was “getting better” kind of goes to show where he stands.

Brown might have the most experience but Thompson has the most talent in the quarterback room and he raises the ceiling of this offense.

Oregon needs to go with Thompson if it wants to win big this season.
