Marcus Mariota has played the role of backup quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders and has possibly his biggest play to date on Thanksgiving, helping lead the team to a 36-33 win over the Dallas Cowboys in overtime.

Desean Jackson who was recently signed by Las Vegas got the scoring started with a 56-yard touchdown from Derrick Carr. The Raider took a lead into halftime, but Dallas came back to tie the game at 30. The Cowboys did not have what I would call their best game. They were without their top two wide receivers in Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb. Cooper is out due to COVID-19 protocols, Lamb with a concussion.

Carr finished the game completing 24 of 39 passes for 373 yards and a touchdown, but it was the Cowboys’ errors that were the story for the game. Both teams had 14 penalties called for a total of 28 for the game, but the biggest call was pass interference on Dallas on a third-down play giving Las Vegas new life and an opportunity.

Enter Marcus Mariota into the game. Mariota has seen limited action in games this season but has shown he can run the offense when he has played. Derrick Carr is and will be the starter moving forward as long as he is healthy, but Carr has one element to his game that is missing. He is an elite passer but is not known for being a dual-threat. Mariota on the other hand is.

Mariota came in the game in the third quarter and took a direct snap into the endzone to push the lead at the time to 24-13.

Las Vegas Kicker Daniel Carlson had two big kicks on the afternoon, a 65-yard kick with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, and a 29-yard kick in overtime to win the game for the Raiders 36-33.

Dallas has lost three of their last four games on the season and entering this weekend’s games it gives Philadelphia (5-6) some hope of competing for the NFC East. The Cowboys have 10 days off before facing the New Orleans Saints. Philadelphia will get another NFC East foe in the New York Giants this weekend.

The Raiders will host the Washington Redskins on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 1:05 p.m. Pacific Time.
