Dan Lanning has been on a roll in terms of hiring his new Oregon football coaching staff and he has reportedly added another elite recruiter.

If you’ve been keeping up with the Dan Lanning coaching staff search, you’d have to feel really good about how Oregon football is shaping up for 2022 and beyond.

Lanning has been pulling guys in from the NFL to be position coaches and one of my favorite hires has been Tosh Lupoi, who spent 2021 on Urban Meyer’s Jaguars coaching staff, as the new defensive coordinator. He’s a former Alabama assistant who happens to be one of the best recruiters in the nation. Lanning actually beat out Mario Cristobal for Lupoi.

The coaching staff is coming together nicely and Lanning still has some final spots to fill, but he already has his offensive coordinator (Kenny Dillingham) and defensive coordinator (Lupoi) positions filled which is huge.

Now he can just add elite recruiters as position coaches.

And he’s adding another elite recruiter as Pete Thamel reported that Lanning was zeroing New Mexico quarterbacks coach Drew Mehringer who was the Rivals 2019 National Recruiter of the Year. He has since been reportedly hired.

Mehringer is just the latest example of a guy who is looking for the right fit after bouncing around at big schools such as Texas and Ohio State. Oregon might just be that perfect fit.

Sometimes coaches are hired as position coaches in which they have no experience because they’re such good football minds and recruiters that they just need any spot. Mehringer has never been a tight ends coach before, but he’s a smart offensive mind and a top-tier recruiter, so this move was a no-brainer for Lanning.

This coaching staff is starting to look like one of the best in the Pac-12 already and Lanning has yet to get to Eugene full time.
