Dan Lanning is already getting to work to try and land some of the top prospects in the 2022 class for Oregon football, including a Georgia commit.

Dan Lanning has only been on campus for a few days after winning the national title as Georgia’s defensive coordinator, but the new Oregon football coach is already hard at work.

With the dead period over, Lanning is hosting some big-time players over the weekend of Jan. 15 and one of those is a familiar name for the new head coach.

In fact, Lanning has been recruiting one of the visitors over the weekend for years and he’s currently committed to Georgia.

According to his 247Sports recruiting profile, Oregon officially offered James on Friday and he’s on campus this weekend for an official visit. This can’t make Kirby Smart all that happy as his former assistant is trying to bring a top running back recruit with him to Eugene, but when James didn’t sign in the early period despite being committed to Georgia since March, he had to expect this.

James is the No. 188 overall recruit and 16th-best running back in the class, according to the composite. The Tennessee-based prospect is also being pursued by Notre Dame and Florida State.

James could play early for Oregon football

This is a big visit for the Ducks and it looks like they’re in good shape here because James would have a chance to play fairly early on with Trey Benson and Travis Dye announcing their intentions to transfer from Oregon.

The depth chart is currently freshman Byron Cardwell, an injured CJ Verdell (who might declare for the NFL draft), and oft-injured Sean Dollars. There would be a clear path for James to play.

Lanning has to be selling an opportunity to James and the fact that he’s willing to listen might just mean the Ducks are the team to beat outside of Georgia.
