Travis Dye shocked everyone when he entered the transfer portal last week. The former Oregon football star is ranked the third-best transfer on the market.

In the new transfer portal era, it’s not shocking to see a mass exodus every December and January. Heck, even after four games (in order to retain a redshirt), many players enter the portal.

Usually portal entries are seen from a mile away but there are occasional star players who experience coaching changes or other unforeseen obstacles that decide to enter the portal in order to look for a fresh start after some bad luck at their original program.

Rarely are portal entries as shocking as Oregon football’s Travis Dye.

The veteran running back was fresh off a 1,000-yard campaign with the Ducks and it looked like he would either decide to go the NFL route or return for one last season in Eugene. He chose ‘Option C’ last week, entering the portal ahead of his final season of eligibility.

While shocking, Dye’s entry into the portal has been met with a ton of attention and everyone seems to be high on the former Duck. He will be a top transfer target this offseason.

In fact, 247Sports just came out with their latest transfer rankings and Dye comes in as the No. 3 uncommitted player in the portal. He’s also the No. 20 overall transfer.

While this isn’t exactly comforting news for Oregon fans who would welcome him back with open arms, it just goes to show how solid he was for the Ducks and probably was taken for granted.

Could he still make a return to Oregon? Sure, anything is possible, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go to a team looking for a clear No. 1 workhorse back — Dye has proven he can be just that.
