It took two wins last week for the New York Liberty to make the WNBA Playoffs led by Sabrina Ionescu. They made an opening game statement in their best of three series with the Chicago Sky.

The New York Liberty at the start of the season looked nothing like a playoff team starting the season losing more games than they won, but Sabrina Ionescu put the team on her back and brought them to WNBA Playoffs. The team trailed by six with just under four minutes to go in the opening game vs Chicago but found a spark to go on a 13-0 run to win the game.

On the night, Ionescu reset the WNBA record books again for the New York Liberty helping gain a team-high 22 points in the 98-91 win over the Sky. It also helped set the franchise record for most points in a playoff game for the Liberty. The final minutes of the game saw Chicago go on a complete meltdown.

The team went on a zero for eight-run, which included going zero for five from three-point range and also missing two free throws. It was a clear upset with New York finding their way into the WNBA Playoffs as one of the last eligible seeds thanks to an end of the regular season performance by Ionescu and a New York team that found chemistry at the right time.

Oregon Women’s Basketball great Sabrina Ionescu leads New York Liberty to a playoff victory

With Sabrina Ionescu in the WNBA Playoffs, there should be an appointment to watch Game 2. After watching her success with Oregon Women’s Basketball, she worked her way back from an injury last season and has become a more complete player. She talked about the momentum following the win, “I think it was more just this proud feeling of we came here and we did what we needed to do. And what nobody believed we could do.”

They need one more win in this short series to get to the second round.

Game 2 between New York and Chicago is set for Saturday morning at 9 am Pacific Time. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
