Former Oregon football quarterback Marcus Mariota has landed with a new team. On Friday he signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles to backup Jalen Hurts.

The team that was the Super Bowl runner-up lost signal caller Gardner Minshew to free agency in the last week. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts .

It has been an interesting NFL career so far for Mariota, who entered last season with the Atlanta Falcons looking for an opportunity for a fresh start with a new team. Unfortunately, it did not work out. By Week 15 he was sidelined and later cut from the Falcons. He did have surgery for a knee injury after going on injured reserve.

In 2022 for Atlanta, Mariota threw for fifteen touchdowns and nine interceptions and was responsible for over 2200 yards through the air. Mariota has struggled to stay healthy in the NFL and yet again has a chance at a fresh start, this time with a likely Super Bowl contender.

Philadelphia has spent the last few days resigning and reloading at key positions after losing key players to free agency. Along with Mariota, Philadelphia has brought back Cornerback Darius Slay. Jason Kelce, the all-pro center is returning for another season.

Philly GM Howie Roseman is working his magic with cap space to fill positions as he has done in the past and the NFL Draft will almost certainly bring a key piece or two for the future.

Mariota is one of those important pieces. He will be the backup for Jalen Hurts for the upcoming season.

The former Oregon quarterback is now with his fourth NFL team after starting his career with the Tennessee Titans. He also spent time as a backup with the Las Vegas Raiders and of course last season as the starter with the Falcons before heading to the city of brotherly love.

In his NFL career, Mariota has played in 93 games completing better than 60 percent of his passes over that span. He is responsible for 93 touchdowns through the air and 17 on the ground.
